TIGER STYLE

Vancity Original® linked up with our long-time Chinese friend, the graffiti/tattoo artist, K.C. (aka EPHX) and collaborated on an amazing piece for our collection… The "Vancity Original® Tiger Style" satin bomber jacket. We journeyed deep in to the heart of East Van to put in some work.

When did you know that art would be your passion and how did you get in to graffiti and tattooing?

K.C.: It all started with colouring books as a child. I just never stopped doing visual art as a hobby. Street Art got me deeper into the arts. Like Kung Fu, it's a lifetime journey of reaching the next level. Taking it day by day always learning.

What was the transition like from doing art on walls to inking skin?

K.C.: It was definitely intriguing and challenging to learn a new medium. Graff made the transition easier since the street is textured and has volume. Skin also has volume. I guess I get up on people too.

Have you ever had anyone pass out on you?

K.C.: Yes a few times. I think it's due to anxiety and anticipation. By the time they get inked they've wasted their energy. But after the initial realization, most people are warriors and finish.

What's the worst place you ever tattooed anyone?

K.C.: Areas that have a lot of contact. The ink always rubs off to some degree. Elbows, hands, knees, feet..

How would you describe a person who asks to get a tiger tattoo?

K.C.: A tiger is a very independent and confident creature. They are born leaders and protectors.  Out of the five tigers, the Sun tiger (yellow/orange) is the supreme ruler of all tigers.  Symbolizes more wealth.  I think it's awesome when people want to customize or personalize it to reflect who they are.

Who would win in a Kung Fu match? Praying Mantis or Tiger Style?

K.C.: Haha.. tough one, they are both fierce. I guess it depends on who's the greater martial artist.

K.C. is well known for Neo-Asian style art and tattooing people in the privacy of his East Van temple, his place of Zen.

Vancity Original® For Chinatown continues it's campaign and leads the parade for Chinese New Year. The official release date for the collection is set for Friday, February 27th.
